Application of polyacrylamide in mining

November 05, 2024

Polyacrylamide (PAM) is widely used in mining operations for improving mineral separation, resource recovery, and water treatment efficiency. Here are the main applications of PAM in mining:
Henan Yuanbo Environmental Technology Co., LTD.
1. Flocculation and Separation of Slurries
In the extraction of minerals such as gold, copper, and iron, slurry typically contains fine particles and impurities. Polyacrylamide, through its high molecular weight and charge properties, interacts with fine particles in the slurry, promoting their aggregation into larger flocs, making it easier to separate valuable minerals from waste. This process is known as flocculation, and it plays a vital role in the separation process during mining.

- Application Scenarios: Used in flotation, gravity separation, sedimentation, and filtration. After flocculation, fine particles in the slurry are aggregated into larger flocs that are easier to separate through gravity, centrifugation, or filtration.

2. Mineral Flotation
During mineral flotation, polyacrylamide can be used as an auxiliary agent to improve flotation efficiency. Particularly in slurries with high clay content or fine mineral particles, PAM helps remove undesirable substances (like clay and fine particles), allowing flotation reagents to concentrate on valuable minerals, thus improving flotation yield and selectivity.

3. Tailings Recovery and Treatment
Tailings are waste by-products from mining, often containing fine mineral particles. Polyacrylamide is used in the concentration, sedimentation, and dewatering of tailings, helping to recover mineral resources and reduce environmental impact.

- Application Scenarios: In tailings ponds, PAM aids in speeding up the settlement of tailings, separating water and solid materials, and reducing environmental pollution. Additionally, it helps increase the solid content of tailings, making them easier to treat or dispose of.

4. Ore Leaching and Solid-Liquid Separation
In ore leaching, where ores react with solvents to extract valuable metals, PAM is used to facilitate solid-liquid separation by flocculating solid impurities in the leachate, enhancing the efficiency of the leaching process.

5. Mining Water Treatment
Mining operations generate large amounts of wastewater that contain fine particles and suspended solids. PAM is used for wastewater treatment to remove suspended particles and harmful substances, improving water quality and promoting water recycling.

6. Drilling Mud Treatment
In mining exploration, especially during deep drilling and ore investigation, polyacrylamide is used to improve the properties of drilling mud. It increases the viscosity of the mud, enhances drilling efficiency, and prevents ore fragmentation and equipment wear.

7. Heap Leaching
In heap leaching, ore is soaked with chemical solutions to extract metals. Polyacrylamide is used to separate the solid particles from the leachate, ensuring efficient metal extraction from the ore.

8. Solvent Extraction
In mineral processing, especially in metal solvent extraction, PAM serves as a flocculant to help remove impurities from the solvent, improving the selectivity and efficiency of the extraction process.

Advantages of Polyacrylamide in Mining:
- Efficiency: Polyacrylamide offers highly effective flocculation in slurry treatment and mineral separation.
- Environmental Benefits: It helps reduce waste water and sludge discharge by effectively separating harmful substances.
- Economic Benefits: Increases mineral recovery rates and lowers production costs.
- Versatility: Suitable for a wide range of ores, including gold, copper, bauxite, and iron ores.

The choice and use of polyacrylamide depend on the specific characteristics of the slurry, such as particle size, pH, and charge properties, to achieve optimal separation results.
